uisa Maria Konga is half-Angolan and half-German. Channeling her craft as a model and a photographer, her work portrays one message: people of African descent are naturally beautiful inside and out.
Over the past three years, Konga has balanced the increasing demand for her work with being a single mother and a Mechanical Engineering student. This journey started in 2012 with a photo shoot for a friend’s beauty salon in England and France.
Since then, she has worked with several products, clothing and brands. After her salon shoot, she was immediately booked for a fashion shoot. Then, her path led her to the modeling agency, Düsseldorf, where she received a job offer for ESPIRIT a few days after signing. The rest is history.
From commercial shoots to photography, Luisa has not only been in front of the lens. She is also passionate about being behind the lens. Her ethnic mix has helped define her artistic eye such that her photography portfolio is shaped by the expanded vision of the world that having two different cultures affords.
Konga’s work is a translation of her feeling, her inner self. She builds her portfolio to resonate with her soul, creating unique images that captivate viewers. What lies within her? Africa.
“Africa lives within me”, she explains. The fabrics, the colors and the textures as well as the cuisine and handicraft in Africa, all these inspire her. In fact, one could describe her work as photographic-activism. Her oeuvres oppose preconceived notions of African features as uncivilized and ugly. Through her pieces, she rejects the idea of ‘Europeanizing’ one’s appearance but embraces the illustration that natural is beautiful.
Her resolve is to use her craft to tackle important social issues. As it concerns the African continent, she is currently exploring the possibility of benefitting from the richness that collaborating with more artists of the soil presents but also excited to capture more artistic photographs connected to the continent. One of such projects will showcase the African charm with an African-fabrics themed photo shoot.
Model, mother, photographer and student. If you ask her what has driven her success? Luisa Konga answers that optimism and creativity have been the two vital factors. Whether learning Lingala or her upcoming photographic tour of Lisbon, Portugal via Belgium, France and Spain, Luisa is continually looking for new ways to improve herself and push boundaries so that she can better articulate her message of the natural beauty of Africa and it’s people.
